Hold Tight by Harlan Coben

Mike and Tia Baye are worried about their teenaged son.  He has grown distant, constantly wears black and to top it all off, his best fried committed suicide a few short months ago.  They finally make the difficult decision to put spy-ware on their son’s computer to see what he’s been up to all those hours alone in his bedroom.  A difficult decision for Mike and Tia, but one they are ultimately glad they made.

This story moves fast and, although it gets complicated with several story lines eventually merging, it is an excellent read.  One of those books I stay up until 2:00 am reading because I don’t want to put it down.

Weighed In The Balance by Anne Perry
It isn't often I pick up a book I can't finish, but this was one of them.  I struggled to get through the first chapter but persevered hoping I would get into the story further along.  I finally gave up last night, only half way through.

The problem was I didn't care about the characters...the murder victim was unsympathetic, I didn't care for his wife, or the woman accusing the wife of murder.  I didn't even like Monk in this story.

I have no idea what Ms. Perry was thinking when she wrote this story!  Your opinion may be different than mine, but I would suggest getting it from the library before you decide to add it to your collection.

The Chocolate Bridal Bash by JoAnna Carl

Lee McKinney's wedding to Joe Woodyard is coming up fast and Lee's mom is hesitant to come back to her hometown for the nuptials, although she won't say why.  Inadvertently, Lee discovers a skeleton in her mother's closet and is determined to get to the bottom of things.

This is the first book of JoAnna Carl's I have read. I didn't have any trouble following the story even though this is number six in a series. The story moves quickly and has a light tone which I enjoy.  The one troubling aspect is Lee McKinney's "malapropisms" where she misspeaks quite a bit.  Although this is probably meant to be cute and endearing and probably give the reader some insight into what Lee is really thinking, I find it somewhat annoying.

Buckingham Palace Gardens by Anne Perry

When the body of a prostitute is found in a linen cupboard at Buckingham Palace during a weekend house party, Thomas Pitt, now assigned to the Selective Service, is called in to discreetly resolve the matter.  But, in order to get a closer look at the suspects, he enlists the help of his own maid to go undercover at the palace.

With the possibility of a transcontinental African railroad at stake, not to mention the British monarchy, Pitt must find the killer quickly and quietly.

Anne Perry gives us a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes workings of Buckingham Palace with her uncanny ability to capture the Victorian era and take us there.  The twists and turns in this plot will have you guessing, then guessing again right up to the end.

McLeod’s Daughters Review

I've been watching this Australian series over the Memorial Day weekend with my 15 year old daughter.  We are only half way through season one but we both absolutely love it.

Sister's Claire (Lisa Chappell) and Tess (Bridie Carter) McLeod we raised separately after their parents divorced.  Tess was raised in the city and Claire stayed with her father to grow up on the family ranch in the Australian bush.  Now that both parents are dead, the sisters are trying to run the ranch while also getting reacquainted.  A cast of characters including the household manager and her teenage daughter as well as the reformed town floozie struggle to make the ranch profitable.  The story lines and character development are excellent.

There is a movie of the same name that the series is based from, but I would recommend skipping the movie and going straight to the series.
